Navigating Summer’s Impact: Workplace and Substance Use

Did you know that summer can increase the risk for substance use among employees, especially younger adults and those with substance use disorder?

More free time and social activities can be triggers for initiating or increasing use. Longer summer days, boredom, and excessive heat can worsen mental health issues like anxiety and depression (Griffin, RM, www.webmd.com). High temperatures can also exacerbate the effects and health risks of substance use. In fact, research shows that warmer weather is associated with higher rates of emergency room visits and hospitalizations involving substance use (Parks, RM, et al, pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).

What Employers Can Do

Proactive measures and clear communication are key:

  • Download Our Free Get. Give. Save. Toolkit: Utilize a wide range of tools and graphics to raise awareness and save lives from drug overdose.
  • Clearly Define Expectations: Ensure that your employee manual explicitly prohibits illegal drug use, being under the influence at work, and on-the-job alcohol consumption.
  • Outline Clear Consequences: Detail disciplinary actions for policy violations.
  • Explain Support Options: Emphasize that your organization offers help, not judgment, highlighting Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and other confidential resources.
  • Ensure Legal Compliance: Ensure that your policies adhere to all federal, state, and local laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and workers’ compensation. Consult legal counsel.
