After losing Victoria to a drug overdose in 2015, David and Jackie Siegel dedicated themselves to understanding how this tragedy came to pass. In doing so, they learned a great deal about the recognizable signs of risk and substance abuse in youth—the very signs they either missed, misunderstood, or underestimated in Victoria.
Although they cannot change their story of loss, David and Jackie created VITAL SIGNS program to save other families from experiencing a similar tragedy.

VITAL SIGNS
For Parents, Caregivers and Educators
VITAL SIGNS empowers parents and caregivers with the tools to identify and address the early signs of behavioral health issues and substance use in their children.
Each session focuses on one of several risk factors, from low self-esteem, bullying, sexual behavior and mental health issues to experimentation with alcohol, vaping, marijuana, and drugs.
We invite you to curate your personal VITAL SIGNS parenting toolkit with the knowledge, skills, and strategies that will best serve you and your child at every stage of development:
- Drug awareness and education
- Clinical and parental insights and anecdotes
- Life skills and coping mechanisms
- Conversation tips and starters
- Parenting strategies for at-risk youth
- Activities for strengthening your family foundation
- Parent-child journal prompts
- Family constitution guidance and template
- Family calendar and more
- Strategies and solutions to address areas of emotional and behavioral concern
- Recommended resources for further learning and support
VITAL SIGNS IN YOUR COMMUNITY
We have also created a free VITAL SIGNS Community Conversations program to enable coalitions and like-minded, parent-facing organizations to engage local parents in our VITAL SIGNS content via a live, interactive group format.
A Community Conversation is NOT a lecture, presentation, or “talking-to” for parents. It is an informed conversation about the risk factors for youth-led BY parents, FOR parents, in SUPPORT OF parents. We fully believe that our VITAL SIGNS program for parents is made more relevant and valuable by the local leadership and families who facilitate and inform these discussions, share their experiences, and provide ongoing community-level support and learning for parents.
Participants in your VITAL SIGNS Community Conversation are also eligible to receive our free VITAL SIGNS completion kit.
If you are interested in hosting a VITAL SIGNS Community Conversation in your area, contact nicki@victoriasvoicefoundation.com for more information.
